Feedback wanted from Sarah

I would like to explore whether there is a case for developing children's reading comprehension through drama. I would use the many techniques we uncovered and explored together. I could therefore link with pros and cons and the wider cross curricular issues. If this works then how about using drama in other subject areas like maths, science etc. ?

I am going to look at year 2 lower ability (the class I am working in) and then year 5/6, through an after school drama club. I could cover harder literature like poems and shakespeare? I guess looking at both key stages would add greater validity?

Sarah, there is a lot here perhaps too much for 1 assignment but certainly you can look at drama to help with inference & dedcution/ comprehension skills and comparing Yr2 with the drama club kids would be very interesting

  1. Hi SJ, I was reading Ingrid's comments and thinking that comparing the Y2 class work to an informal drama lub would be interesting, as she mentioned. It's a different atmosphere, culture. The children and teacher are more relaxed, would the results reflect this by showing that the children developed deeper learning through being in an informal atmosphere. Would it show that we need to create this atmosphere in the classroom? There could be a lot in this and it would be really reflective. What is a REALLY effective learning environment?

  2. Please note deliberate spelling mistake with Drama lub. It sounds rather naughty.....soz.

  3. Hi Sarah! I think that this is a great idea to compare the two different age groups instead of just sticking with one. I like Kirsty's comment about considering the learning environment too, that is definately something to take into account.

  5. Hello all.Well we are having teething trouble I think. My school is very prescriptive and totally obsessed about all children achieving a 2b in year 2 SATS. i guess this is all part and parcel or teaching though. My school also does not follow the National Curriculum for many subjects and does SFA. So the children are stuck to reading the Oxford Reading Tree books and are not exposed to other more creative and experimental literature-I find this very difficult. The school is up for incorporating drama and I was asked to lead a lesson with only ten mins warning, so i tried my best but ever the perfectionist I did not feel it went the best it could have been.
I really like your ideas Amy and could see you easily pulling it off. Sonia your ideas are good too I am not sure how you would specifically measure comprehension, oral and written understanding maybe measuring something different?

Well I hope all is well take care. I would appreciate any feedback on my ideas.

    Sarah
